Here's a great LIFE Magazine shot of the motive power at the C&NW roundhouse on the North Side of Chicago. Besides the GP on the table, there's an interesting mix of power in the house. That's the Montgomery Ward HQ and warehouse in the background.

Now that you mention it, that looks like fire damage. The brickwork has been damaged also!
Great photo.
My pleasure to share it, guys. C&NW is one of my favorite roads, and a "home rode", and one that I still commute on. I remember the 1950s steam commuter trains near my grandparents' home in Norwood Park; the Es, the Fs, the GPs; everything about it. I'm a member of the C&NWHS. I just wish I took photos back then!
Nice photo. Thanks for the post.
John thanks posting this nice photo of CNW. I know what you mean about taking photos back then. I lived on the Southwest side of Chicago and had the Belt Railway of Chicago transfer track right behind my house and all the midwest railroads ran units back there. Not one photo from my old house : ( just memories : ).
Franktrain:
I used to hang out at the Belt and the Grand Trunk. Grew up in West Lawn, just off Pulaski, a mile east of Midway. I just wasn't taking train photos back then, although I had a Kodak Brownie Starmite.
