Can one take the parts out of a Protosound powered B unit and transplant them into a Protosound dummy A unit and end up with a runnable unit with lights, etc?

Yes most likely. Biggest thing to check is how similar the trucks are. If you can swap the geared trucks, everything else gets easier. G
I'll have to check the trucks; thought they had gears on them but no motor ... don't remember now.

If it's a factory dummy, I'd be surprised if it has gears.
Yes I know your talking MTH but back in the 90's I think some of the lionel GP-9 and other engines the dummies had exact same trucks just didn't have the gears on them.
So I'm guessing if you get lucky it might be the same story I know nothing about MTH engines thou.
