HandyAndy`s interlocking tower reminded me of such projects that were  popular in toy train magazines in the years following the war.

Lionel`s` Model Builder` had many plans for accessories, and even trains.  Sometimes made of cardboard, some tinplate. Another magazine with such plans was `Toy trains`.  Some years ago I made a tower from an article published in the February 1952 issue.

Here is a photograph of it. More recently I made a tinplate streetcar with a Marx motor, this was in `Model Builder`.

not too far off topic, in 1935-36 Erector tried out a hi-rise structure kit...

1935-S-1s

 1935-S-2s

featuring cardboard panels that attached over the Erector girder structure, mostly due to the weight of the contents, boxed sets are extremely rare.  during the two years of production, however, a sample of panels were also included in the higher number sets.

That Erector set is pretty cool too. Are the panels scaled for use with O-gauge trains?

judging by the door size, the upper two (group picture) architecture styles appear to be HO sized (1.2" door height) while the bottom group/ style is nearly twice the size (2" door height).

i'm sure if these had caught on. more styles or storefront depictions would probably have been produced.  wonder how different things would be today if Photoshop had existed in the 30's.
