Will I would visit a couple of the area hobbyshops, here are a few
Des Plaines Hobbies (2R and 3R)
Chicagoland Hobby (mostly 3R but still good)
Berwyn's Toy's and Trains (3R but can still find some neat stuff)
I'm sure some of the locals will chime in with others.
If you can swing it give Ted Schnepf a call at Rails Unlimited, he might be able to get you in at the Fox Valley O Scalers layout. It's fantastic!

You may want to go to the Museum of Science and Industry . They have a really huge HO (I know I know) layout. It's really neat.
The also have the restored Burlington Zephyr at the Museum of Science and Industry. Before heading to the stores, I'd call they may not have much of what you are looking for or more than you thought.
Hey will I also recommend checking out the Museum, the layout is HO but it is still cool. Here are some pics of it.

Wow guys! Thanks for all the info...I will definitely try to hit up the museum! That looks like a great RR and the Zephyr looks awesome!
Will, just checking back with you on what stops you were able to make while in the windy city?
Mike,
I actually didnt get to make ANY! Moving my sister in took a lot longer than I expected it too. I will be going back this winter to watch her perform in Joffery Ballet's Nutcracker so I will most definitely check out as much as I can then. Also, I have a free room to stay in for March Chicago meet!
No worries, was just curious... I'll look for further updates then and hope to see you at the March Meet.
