After a lot of searching over the years, I've managed to obtain some 1930's era cars and trucks (late 1920s to early 1940s) for my layout, but matching figures of that era is more challenging. Preiser makes some nice figures, but they are expensive. Does anyone have a lead on who makes figures from the "good old days" when men and women dressed nice and wore hats, etc? If Preiser is the only choice, does anyone know of a retailer that discounts them? So far, on auction sites a package of 6 figures go for about $46, which is very costly IMO.

Thanks.

Golden Gate Depot sells sets of 36 1930s-1950s "Little People" for $28 + 10 shipping.  They are all seated figures and are a mix of 1930s and 1950s style.  They are not highly detailed figures like the Preiser and the painting is marginal quality, but they are adequate for inside of a passenger car.

Preiser also makes unpainted sets if you find painting 100 figures relaxing and not tedious.  24 seated passengers for $36 at Hobbylinc.  They look more like 1940s.

There are many figures cheap from China on eBay, painted or unpainted, of varying quality.  Search for "1:50 figures."  Caution: Many are an obvious lower quality forgery of the preiser figures.  I try to honor intellectual property rights, so I avoid those.
