CN to try Nat Gas | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Here in Northern Alberta, CN is trying out a couple of converted engines with a cool new tank car to carry all that gas.

That's going to be a great looking tank car. I like that particular train too with the caboose.

I'm waiting for the first one with enough nerve to call it a "tender."

The linked article says that "natural gas is currently cheap and plentiful in North America." But what would happen to the price of natural gas if major railroads started using it for locomotive fuel? Supply and demand, anyone?

It's an interesting idea. But it strikes me as mainly a PR exercise at this time.

Well, natural gas is coming to the front as a replacement fuel because there is such a glut of it now. The limiting factor is the distance that can be travelled before a re-fuel is needed - hence that big gas tank on wheels!
Personally, I would rather see innovation to use the product here (N. America) than to just load it on ships to go elsewhere.

MTH has the Premier European style Tank Car that could be used.

The Lionel Tank Train tank cars are similar to that Tank Car.

Maybe the Mfg's will hold off until they see what the results are and the direction the RR's will go.
