Wiring scheme for use with MTH and Lionel engines (either conventional or command control)

My control system uses 2 MTH #50-1003 TIUs, two independent 18 VAC power supplies, 4 MTH #50-1004 AIUs and one MTH #50-1002 hand held controller.  My layout is wired with multiple control zones (blocks) which are wired from TIUs to each track zone using 18 gauge shielded conductor pairs.  I use wire designed specifically for communication systems. The shield wires from each pair are all connected at one point. I also have a separate custom made annunciator panel that displays using colored LEDs the condition of each block and each turnout (switch) position. The annunciator panel has the track pattern which is an exact 1/16th scale replica.

My layout design has an outer 0-72 radius loop with 0-72 turnouts and an 0-72 WYE stub yard.

The inner loop is point to point using 0-54 radius curves.  The inner and outer tracks are connected via 2 0-72 crossovers. The zones (blocks) are operated via an AIU.  The power circuits to each zone is controlled using heavy duty (10 ampere) relays which are controlled by outputs from the AIU. No individual hand operated switches are needed except for a master emergency disconnect switch on each power supply. One AIU is dedicated to zone control, another AIU is dedicated to turnout control and the remaining two are used for various signals and accessories.

I can operate any MTH PS-1, MTH PS-2, Williams or Lionel conventional) engine using one MTH controller on any portion of the layout since I have direct remote control of every circuit.

Photos to come.

Continuing from above:

Note 1: All power feed circuits for zone control are totally shielded.  The relays used to power each zone are contained in a shielded metal enclosure.  All shields from the power wires to the various zones terminate at this metal enclosure as well.

Note 2: The power feed relays are wired normally closed. The relays open on command.

Note 3: The power feeds can be sourced via TIU #1 or TIU #2 via a set of two power routing relays. These power routing relays are also controlled via an MTH #50-1004 AIU.

Note 4: The annunciator panel displays the status of all power feeds.  These power feeds are shown with separate LEDs on the panel.  These LEDs designate either power fed from TIU #1 or from TIU #2.

My control system uses 2 Lionel KW transformers for raw power to the MTH 50-1003 TIUs.  In addition I have custom made circuit protection boxes installed in line with the 18 vac from the KWs that contain both fast acting fuses (7A) and resettable circuit breakers (5A). The boxes also have LEDs to show the status of the power from the KWs. I also have a separate 12VDC supply that is used for powering the annunciator panel.

I use heavy duty 40A relays for routing to my blocks.  These relays are powered by separate 12vdc circuits. The output from an AIU is used to activate the relay. At the same time I send a signal to my annunciator panel which displays the status of the block using a yellow LED. In addition I use another relay to select either a DCS output or conventional (variable) output from the TIU.  All my RealTrax turnouts are operated from separate 18 volt circuits which are current limited to 1.5 amperes. I use two 10 ohm 10W resistors (in parallel) to limit the current for each turnout solenoid. Also the 18 volt circuits are fused for 3 amperes in the event of a short circuit. The instantaneous short circuit draw is 3.6 amperes worst case.
