Hi All; is it possible to control the RS-3 Diesel rail sounds from my MRC transformer using the bell, whistle or direction buttons?  Or, could I do that from my MTH Z-4000 which does have a "program" button along with the bell, horn, direction buttons?  Maybe I just need to purchase a TMCC controller.  Except for the "run - Program" switch under the front truck, there are no obvious external controls for the rail sounds on the engine.  The previous user may have added this option.  Have good engine startup, run and shutdown sounds but would like to explore other rail sounds options.  Thanks for any suggestions, Craig

Railsounds 4 offered no sound control other than horn & bell using conventional control.  Railsounds 5 did have some control, a brief whistle blast would trigger crew talk.

Obviously, the way to have full control of all the features like sounds, couplers, etc. is to use a Lionel command system.

Normally the only external switches are PGM/RUN and a Smoke ON/OFF if smoke equipped.  Some TMCC engines will also have a Cruise ON/OFF switch if they have Odyssey speed control.

The MRC transformer will at most control basic sound functions (horn, whistle, bell).  The Z-4000 programming is for MTH locos, and won't be useful for Lionel locos to my knowledge.  Do you have the loco manual, which should delineate any options for sound controls in conventional?

If it is a recent loco with Bluetooth, you can control many sounds using the LionChief app or Universal Remote.  If an earlier loco without Bluetooth, you will need TMCC or Legacy,  as noted above.

"I do have the Lionel LC/LC plus universal multiple engine remote control (haven't used it yet as my layout is not complete, would that work for basic sounds?  I'll give it a try."

Universal Remote will work with LionChief, LionChief+, LionChief+ 2.0 and Legacy locos with Bluetooth.  Earlier Legacy and TMCC locos without Bluetooth will not respond.  Can usually download the manual from the Lionel site (if missing) if you have the loco model number. If you have the box, Bluetooth will be listed on the box as a feature if present.
