I got one of these as a stocking stuffer a few years back.  I find it very difficult to use.  It has to be positioned exactly correctly on the piece you're soldering or else your get the short light.  I suppose it might be fine for crafts like jewelry making or on something very flat, but on the many different types of soldering I've had to do in model railroading, I've returned to a regular soldering iron.

At this point I would use a match before using a cold heat solderer - it will be less frustrating.

 

I found that they do not work well when they work at all.  Received one as a gift and replaced it under warranty a couple of times before deciding even that wasn't worth the time and trashing it.  Tried it on all kinds of projects from simply soldering two wires together (sometimes worked) to soldering wires to pcb (never worked).

 

They eat batteries quickly as well.
