coupler differences

The Mth upgrade kits always have you replace the couplers. My question; is there a difference between a ps-1, ps-2 and the upgrade coupler, either electrical or mechanical?

Yes, PS/1 couplers are designed for AC track power, they're compatible with Lionel TMCC couplers. PS/2 or PS/3 couplers are the same. You will want to replace the PS/1 coupler with the proper coupler. However, when I upgrade a PS/1 to TMCC, I use that coupler, it works fine for TMCC.
