I have a RailKing 30-2782-1 CNW SD60. I was noticing the smoke not working as well as it had. I rewicked the unit and saturated the wick with Protosmoke fluid. It smoked great, but I noticed poor smoke again after the first refill. I opened the engine up again and found smoke fluid all over the top of the smoke unit. It appeared the funnel was leaking when refilling. Upon further look, the smoke funnel attached to the shell seemed loose. I tried to tighten the screws but they would not tighten. Removing the funnel showed me one of the posts that mounts the funnel had cracked and competent feel apart shortly after. I now have no way to remount the funnel. Is there a way I can get a replacement post and glue it to the shell. If not, what is the best way to fix this? Attached are some pictures of what I’m talking about.

Hi, you can glue the parts back together with gorilla precise! only catch is you want it to dry for 24 hours so it totally set's also it's a good idea to wrap some wire small around the plastic pieces, so it'd held tight while drying over night! wrap the small around and then twist so place plastic pieces are tight otherwise screws won't hold! P.S. will repair

Compatible MaterialWood, Paper, Leather, Ceramic, Plastic, Metal, Rubber

sold at target or amazon! see below

The pieces that it cracked into are VERY small and some appear to be missing. I don’t know I can get them back together properly. If that doesn’t work out is there another method?

I'd probably build the one side up using a small piece of brass tubing and JB-Weld.  Once it hardens, carefully drill the screw hole again.  I'd also slip a small piece of brass tubing over that other post before it cracks totally away and use a little JB-Weld on the inside on that one to secure it.  Fill it up, then drill out for the screw on that side as well.

I build up tons of posts on diesels with JB-Weld and brass tubing, it's typically not that difficult to do as there are no cosmetic issues when you're inside.

Well, I ended up finding an identical replacement shell in very good condition on eBay and simply opted to get that. Fits perfectly and all the shell mounted light work. Topped off the smoke with the shell off and it smoked great again. I went to fill it up after it ran low, same thing! Very little smoke output. I took the new shell off, same exact problem. Smoke fluid everywhere! I have tried three times since to realign the shell and make sure everything is tight including the brass funnel on the smoke unit and the black plastic funnel on the shell. Also being very careful to not pinch any wires. Same result each time. I know it keeps happening because I clean up the spilled smoke fluid after each attempt. I'm at a loss for what to do to get this to accept smoke fluid properly. It seems to not be making it into the smoke unit at all. When I shine a flashlight straight down the stack, I can see all the way down to the wick and there is nothing visibly in the way. Any suggestions?

I came up with a fix for hard to fill smoke stacks.  I took the needle tip applicator from an extra bottle.  Place the tip down to the wick and drip the smoke fluid into the large end of the applicator.  This way the smoke fluid gets all the way down into the smoke unit without running all over the place.  This way you can also count how many drops you are putting in.  If the fluid builds up, just lift up on the applicator tip and the fluid runs right out of the needle portion of the applicator.  Works for steam and diesel engines with unusual fill problems.

I thought about trying that, but previously I had had no issues filling the engine normally with a standard MTH ProtoSmoke or JT’s Mega Steam dropper. The smoke fluid goes down the stack no problem, it’s just that it ends up somewhere inside the engine, but not the smoke unit. It seems to be running down the shell or ending up on top of the smoke unit PCB despite no obvious leaks that I can see.
