Rather than hi-jack someone else's thread I thought I would start a new thread to ask this.

How does the crackle on the MTH re-production Crackle Black 400E compare to the original Lionel? It seems to me that the MTH version is a little thick, almost looks like automotive undercoating in certain areas. Having a Kennedy tool box as a kid that is what I think of when I think of crackle. It was very fin, like a thick orange peel almost, which normally is bad of course. If memory serves, I think you can, or use to be able to, get spray paint in a crackle finish.

The crackle black 400E has grown on me the last few months and I am trying to decide if the MTH version is a good facsimile or should I get a "plain" one and apply the crackle myself at some point.

I know a guy that does the crackle.

he applies the spray paint and then

"cooks" the piece in the oven.

This both sets the paint and makes it crackle.

i cant tell you Temp or how long for the crackle,

although I know that he sets the paint at 150 degrees

for about 15min. It is probably longer than that

to get the crackle affect.
