So I did a search and found topics all over the place on what was asked or needed. I got a 3rd Rail steam engine with cruise commander inside already.
It does operate in conventional so far and I'm searching for what it can do. It does not have sounds and I would like them. If I'm reading correctly it does take TMCC commands? and has cruise.
So is there a simple sound card to add or does the whole thing get replaced? How do I know if it is smoke driver capable?

Joe, what you have just receives TMCC signals and drives the motor. It also has outputs for smoke, lights and electro couplers. For sounds you need an additional board, Railsounds. Three rail, right?

Looks like you have an ERR Cruise Commander. They also offer the Railsounds boards (~$89.95) but a little tricky to find on their website. You can view them if you hit the "PURCHASE" link on the left edge.
Here is a link to a Cruise Commander manual and on page 8 you will see an example of the Railsounds board added on in a tender.

If you don't want the unit I'll buy it from you. Assuming it is still good. If you don't have the TMCC base and transmitter, it won't do you much good.
Just tested it and it works in conventional 3rail AC. I didn't know if it had a TMCC address. I need to test that still. I didn't see any switch for programming it?
Ooops, right there in front of me. just labeled different than I expected.
It looks like in the instructions that 2 pins get shorted for run and are open for programming?

Hmmm, stuck between medium and large sounds? I think my M1 sounds more like the large version?
Too bad I have a articulated sound board set from my Allegheny that's generic articulated. I'd probably then go with an older PS2 set so it matches most of my other stuff. It will probably sit for awhile to make my decision.
No wonder the rest of the front lights don't work. They aren't connected to any power. There was a 3 wire harness that got abandoned. It probably carried power mid wire on an internal three wire harness, from the smoke switch forward.

Actually, for the ERR stuff with the R4LC, the pins are open for running and shorted for programming.
I had to read the instructions closer for that. It does say the opposite. I looked at a picture quickly, and got it wrong. Thanks!
