My PRR MTH E-3 ABA unit with Proto-2 was doing its trips around the layout when it stopped, stalled, and the breaker on the Z-1000 tripped. I reset the breaker and ran it again - same thing. One more try and and it kept running fine. I checked for obstructions on the track or misaligned wheels. I could find nothing. Could it just be needing some track cleaning? Any ideas?

You could be right but I have just been running my PS2 Mohawk and something very similar just happened here. With me it was a loose tether!

how old is the battery? might want to change to a BCR. I have seen similar performance at the club because the battery would not hold the charge.
Its probably a bind in your gear train Making the motors work harder and pull more power. Take a look before you blow the PS2 board look for things like ballast or scenery materials
Got a BCR on board. Will look for debris. Thanks all.
One suggestion is to take a look at where the pickup wires and the ground wires are close together on top of the truck. Sometimes they are tight against each other, and rub through the insulation, causing a short when the truck turns and puts pressure on the wires. I don't think a battery problem would cause this type of short, however.
