Dams

There is a tunnel that is part of the C&O Canal. Pawpaw Tunnel.

Some pictures,  from my bike trip to Washington DC, Great Allegheny Passage, C&O Canal path, note the stone cut locks that have been restored.

Lock house, every lock had a keeper.

The canal is more a system of lakes, ponds, to the side of the Potomac River. Note this bridge is the canal crossing Antietam Creek, where it enters the Potomac.

The creek ran red with blood for three days. About 12 miles from Antietam Civil War Battle Field.

Dam was an afterthought but worked for the moment.

I tried enlarging to see the details but it just got blurry. What's the material?
