Today, I did a little testing of my new MTH DCS Explorer.

This is a neat and fairly inexpensive way to be able to run your Proto2 or 3 engines (Standard Gauge or O gauge) with your IPhone. You can find them for as low as $129 on Ebay.

Our local SGMA MD modular group will use the DCS Explorer at public shows to run our Proto 2 or 3 engines. I bought one for the club, I liked it so much that I bought another for my Carpet Central line.

The unit is a Wi-Fi and TIU together in a small package.

This was a big test: I ran a 408e (with two motors) pulling 7 lit cars for two hours at 50 SMPH...I experienced no problems.

The first DCS Explorer I bought from EBay was from a set and came with a small DC 50 watt transformer, it only put 14 volts on the track, it did pass the test above, but got pretty hot, and the lights in the cars were not real bright. I decided this wall wart didn’t have quite enough power for the task at hand.

I had an extra MTH Z1000, it puts 18 volts on the track, with 100 watts and stays cool. So, the Z1000 is what I will be using with the DCS Explorer.
