I just purchased a 2014 MTH 4-8-4 Imperial  locomotive.  Some of the soft keys do not work.  1. SSU EXT start-up, 2. STW Train wreck, That key gives the sound but the Engines does not stop.  I haven't gone through all the keys so there could be more.  Another item is the crew talk is very limited.

I was told at the  Hobby Shop, "These engines do not have batteries".

Extended startup assumes that the loco hasn't been started.  Therefore, there is no point in the engine stopping.  Stop the loco, shut it down, then press SSU.  LAck of battery shouldn't make a difference, since as soon as you power up the track, the loco although silent is charging its capacitor--takes a few seconds.

I think I failed to explain properly.  (STW) Key on all my PS-2 engines when pressed comes to a grinding crash halt at any speed.  The PS-3 makes the crash sound and goes silent and keeps moving and the engines needs the (Shut Down) key to stop or scroll the speed to 0 and then use the (Start Up) button to restart.

I can only start the engine with the (Start Up ) Button.  If I press the SSU key after the engine is started, there is no extend talk.  I can use the (SSD) key to shut down the engine with extended talk at any time.  Just as the Shut Down Button.  All the PS-2 engines operate this way.  Start up button or Extended SSU key.  As with the SSD and Shut down button.

The PS-3 makes the crash sound and goes silent and keeps moving and the engines needs the (Shut Down) key to stop or scroll the speed to 0

That appears to be how Train Wreck has been implemented in, at least, several of my PS3 engines.

I can only start the engine with the (Start Up ) Button.

That is not how it's supposed to work. You should be able to press SSU before the engine is started up and that button should trigger the extended startup dialog, and start up the engine. If that's not working, you could have a defective sound file and should contact MTH.

If I press the SSU key after the engine is started, there is no extend talk

That's correct.
