Many, many have closed over the last several years. There are really only two left:

Great Lakes Hobby & Train -- Well worth a visit. Still stocks a great deal of 'O' (mostly modern), at least the last time I was there which was a couple of years ago. On Van Dyke just south of the suburb of Utica.
Whistle Stop Hobby Shop -- Mostly a general toy store with some trains. Several display cabinets with postwar, and a little prewar. A little new stock as well. On Harper south of 9 Mile Road.

Although not right around Detroit I go the riders hobby shop in flint occasionally.
