I recently added a BCR to an MTH engine with the 3v board and it acted very strange. The engine seemed to power up just fine and I let it idle for about a minute to charge the BCR. The whistle worked, the lights came. I am running DCS and when I went to actually run the engine the remote said 3 MPH but the engine seemed to be running at about 30 MPH. Also, there was no engine sound, just the same sound that was heard when I initially powered up the engine. I let it idle a little longer just to see if the BCR needed charged more but the engine acted the same way. Eventually the engine would just seem to die and not want to do anything. No matter how many times I tried to power everything down and back up (including the remote and transformer, which is a Z4000 by the way) it acted the same way each time. I put the battery back into the engine and it ran just fine. Could I have gotten a bad BCR? The engine in question is a P&LE 0-8-0 Imperial Steam Engine w/PS2, item #30-1471-1. I've replaced the battery with a BCR in several of my locomotives without a problem.

It's possible to have gotten a bad BCR. However have you tried deleting the engine in question from the DCS hand held remote and then re-adding it with the BCR installed? That may help, not sure.
I had 2 PS-2 engines on the track as I loaded them both to a single engine location and the hand held would start up both even though only one was given a command to start. Try deleting the engine from the remote and re-adding the engine.

At first glance, this doesn't sound like a problem with the BCR.
Have you tried swapping with a known good BCR from a different engine? That would be my first test. Was the engine acting perfectly normal before installing the BCR?

He mentioned it ran fine with the original battery put back in it.
So it could be a programming issue on the DCS remote or dirty track problem.
One thing not mentioned is; was this engine run be itself or with freight or passenger cars behind it? If lighted cars take the lighted car off the tracks and see what happens. I had a Lionel lighted caboose short out it's truck assembly on DCS command control.

I promise I did read the entire post, but I obviously did miss the part about you putting the original battery back in.
In light of this, My thoughts would need me to think that it is a problem with the BCR not charging properly. This could be caused by either a bad BCR, or something not right with the charging circuit on the board. Using a known good BCR will help narrow the focus from BCR to board. If the original battery still has a good charge, then it could mask a problem with the charging circuit.
Yes you can get a bad BCR I had 2 out of 30 that I got of the ones that look like a 9volt battery .

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I do not have another BCR to try and I hesitate to remove one from another engine that's working since some of the electronics are so tight inside these things I don't want to chance harming one that's working. I have not tried resetting the engine with the BCR inside but I may try this if I get a chance. I may just wait until I can get another BCR.
Remove the BCR and test it in DCS with out BCR. If you have the same issue you probably have a board issue. Let us know test results. G
Gentlemen,
I believe he indicated that he reinstalled a good battery and the engine ran correctly, this test alone points to a bad BCR.
Install a different new BCR and see what happens.

I thought PS2 would run without a battery; just wouldn't save settings?

Not necessarily, though it may be bad. The Power Supply board may have a defective charge circuit and the BCR is not being charged. Missed the part about the battery being put back in, so running with out BCR doesn't proof anything. G
I did have time today to insert the BCR into another engine. This time a PS2 equipped PRR Torpedo. The BRC worked fine. So would you say its the charging or power supply board others here have suggested? Would it be worth a try resetting the engine and then trying another BCR?
