When Lionel announced it was doing the AFT cars I was really excited.  When I saw the pictures in the catalog of the first cars, I was even more excited because Lionel was doing accurate cars, including a power car.  Unfortunately I lost some of the excitement after seeing the latest cars (2-pack #4) in the 2017 catalog.  In the catalog, car #100 looked just like a plain baggage car, not the actual Car #100 which was the AFT's entrance car that had additional windows and door details.  Here is Lionel's car (on the right).

Hoping the catalog picture was incorrect, I asked Lionel (via its on-line support) if the catalog picture was correct, or was it incorrect and they were really going to do an accurate #100.  Lionel's response was the catalog picture was correct.  This was disappointing considering the accuracy of the earlier cars, and has me concerned about future cars.

I wonder if enough people buying this set complain will Lionel correct it?  Anyway, my plan, at least for this car, is to find a good modeler that can modify it to look like the actual AFT #100.

Ron,

You can count on me sending an email to Lionel(and Ryan Kunkle) about this car.   When the Lionel AFT was first cataloged,  I had questions about car lengths and details(especially since you can't go by the catalog artwork/artists renditions),  so I emailed Lionel and received an informative email back from Ryan Kunkle assuring me that the cars would be done correctly and Lionel would be doing the complete train over a couple of years.   On this particular car,  I can sort of understand  Lionel not going through the added expense of putting in all the extra window openings on a car that is a one of a kind that will probably not be made again.   But there is NO EXCUSE for not getting the paint scheme/striping correct along the bottom of the car-INCLUDING THE DOORS (right DOC?-at least 3 of them) as Ron has shown in the prototype photos.   There should not be any glaring mistakes with the painting of any of the AFT items as there is a complete AFT website with numerous photos available along with the numerous photos/videos available for research.   I already have purchased both the Lionel AFT steam engines and have all the previously announced AFT cars on order so I want them done right.   As usual-in my opinion.

Nick

After my recent disappointment with the MTH release of the 2014 ATF baggage not marked correctly, I really don't expect too much from Lionel.  I have added the MTH car to my list of projects to correct and will likely do the same with the Lionel when it arrives. Hopefully it will be a better start for the entrance car than a stock baggage which was my original plan.  I also ordered last years Lionel 4 pack and hope the generator car is ok. At this point I just hope they get here in less than the usual 2 years.
