I have a modest O guage collection and i can run 2 trainsets around the ceiling layout in my office. In this house, that will be the limit of what I can do for a layout, but I have a fair amount of trains that are waiting in boxes for their turn. We have a finished basement apartment that is pretty full at this time, but I got 'permission' to use this wall to hang display racks to put the trains on! The ping pong table will stay for now and currently houses my son's HO scale empire and a slot car track, but I intend to hang the racks on the wall behind the table. The wall is 11 feet from end to end. The blue paint is not very neutral and we like it, but I was wondering if I should paint the wall where the trains will sit? What other considerations should I be aware of before I start hanging the racks? What suggestions do you all have for this exciting project?

Since you have limited space, I'd consider something like the Glenn Snyder shelves, it's what I used. They come in 6 foot sections and they'll custom cut to suit. Here's one section, this area is on my stairs and is 7 feet wide. I have a 1 foot extension on the 6 foot stock shelves, and they supply the joiners to connect them together.

Nice. How do you dust the trains / how often? I have been considering custom shelving with glass doors and even electrified track so you can turn the lights on and off on passenger trains, but obviously it's a lot more expensive and can't be easily moved to a new home if necessary.
I actually thought about electrified shelves, but cost would be in the stratosphere unless you make your own. I was going for the maximum density, so the spacing was just enough to easily put them on and off the shelves. I occasionally dust, but sometimes they just get "weathered" until I get to them. I have about 350 feet of shelves in a number of locations.
