Garrett,

It's not very difficult to put a playable whistle into any PS3 engine. However, there are some caveats to doing so.

You'd need to replace both the Sound File and the Chain File (PS3 board's firmware) with files that have the following characteristics:

  • The Sound File must support playable whistle and also all of the features of the Rail King engine that's being modified.
  • The Chain File must be from an engine that has a playable whistle and also has the same features as the Rail King engine.
  • The Chain File should have the same hardware table as does the original Rail King engine. If it does not, lights may not function properly. This may be worked-around by separately loading back the Rail King engine's Hardware Table from its original Chain File. This requires use of an undocumented, but straightforward, procedure.
  • If the driver size or gear ratio of the engine whose Chain File is being loaded is different from the Rail King engine's driver size or gear ratio, the engine's speed may be too slow or too fast. This would make it a poor candidate for being a member of a  lashup. This could, potentially, be corrected by using a different tach reader timing tape.

All of the above can be accomplished using just the DCS Consumer Loader Program. The last item require some understanding of Zip archives on a Windows PC.
