I have a lionel 18" aluminum RPO I'm thinking about having painted to match another set I have.
Has anyone ever had this done or does anyone out there do it? I know it can be tricky.

If you leave the original paint on the car, there should be no problem in repainting it. the difficulty is getting the paint to bond to the aluminum.
You would need to use a etching primer first to paint aluminum eh
My experience is that aluminum holds paint at least as well as brass. If the aluminumis already factorynpainted, just lightly sand the lettering and other areas where thepaint is raised with 600 wet sandpaper, then paint away.
Don't forget - airplanes are mostly aluminum, and paint is not flaking off of them all that much. I just shoot extruded passenger cars with Scale Coat. Sticks fine.
