I could tell you my ideas but it would be best to watch Rich B.'s video on it. (Toy Trains on Tracks website).
Drill holes to connect track? There is no need for that. They just snap together.
There are guide holes on the bottom of the track to show where you should drill to attach track to the bench work. but there is no need to drill anything to attach one section to another.
