George Lasley has outdone himself with this scene. He and I decided weeks ago that a sawmill was needed at the Old King Coal Mine to produce mine timbers for both OKC and for the 3 mines on the nearby York Fork branch.

In these photos you can see the sawmill being built (first few pictures of the sawmill with the roof off by my keyboard) and finalized in place on the layout (latter photos).  I think the photos are self-explanatory, but I hope George will comment in more detail, as will I if you have specific questions.  Note the narrow gauge mine timber tracks leading from the sawmill to the OKC elevator to lift them to the mine.  George can provide details.

George scratchbuilt the little handcarts used to transport the mine timbers to the elevator (depicted in several of the photos on the far side of the OKC tipple).  We are looking for O-gauge or HO mules to help the sawmill workers drag the loaded carts.  Please let me know if you have a source, with thanks.

Scattered among the sawmill pictures are some of the company town of William, WV surrounding the Old King Coal Mining Company operation.

Hope you enjoy.

Thanks Will and George...the new Duckunder is proving to be even greater than the first one!!

Alan,

Yes, it IS more fun than the original Duckunder, yet it's about 50-60% of the size of the first layout.  I learned my lessons well:

1. Build the benchwork high off the floor.

2. Use mostly manual switches.

3. Use mainly Tortoise switch machines for the electric switches (though I have some Z-Stuff, too).

4. Keep as much of the track as possible within arm's reach.

5. Compartmentalize each scene so that only one part of the layout can be seen at the time.

6. All engines/locos and rolling stock are on the layout. Get rid of anything that isn't on the layout.

7. Keep the layout fluid, meaning keep sufficient track space open to prevent congestion of rolling stock.

There were other lessons I incorporated as well, but those are the biggest ones.

I operate everything in Legacy/TMCC exclusively (Cab2 and base software versions 1.52), and all but four of my locomotives are Lionel.

Mine started out bare bones with nothing on it.  Keep at it!

Spence,

George Lasley is a genius! Wish OGR would do an article on his craftsmanship.

Thanks, Dave.  It's George Lasley's craftsmanship that makes it soooooo realistic.

Thank you, but it's my friend, George Lasley, who is the master builder.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Will

The sawmill was fun as well.  The machinery is from BTS but the saw is scratch with a Gyros blade for a Demel tool.  This mill has two feed ramps, one for big logs to be squared and sawn and the other to receive smaller logs to be cut to length for mine props.  They are what you see loaded on the small carts on the ng track.  The track is N flex with about half of the ties removed.  It must be lunch time as no one is loading the carts.  The carts move to the hoist which goes to the mine entrance ramp coming out of the tipple.

The sawdust is JTT leaves scattered and glued in place.  The large logs are from Holly bushes in Will's front yard while the small ones are from a very large Lugustrusm in my driveway that must be pruned back a couple of times a year.

Sawdust removal will be by shovel into a gondola as needed, similar to cinder removal at a small terminal.  Real estate is tight around Old King Coal.

I will answer more questions as you ask them.  Hope everyone has a Happy Turkey Day this week.

George Lasley
