I have a #51 U S Navy switcher. The E-Unit will not turn off. Wether or not the lever is in contact with the stud or not, the unit cycles through forward-neutral-reverse.
What should I look for ?

Make sure the stud isn't inadvertently grounded somehow someway. Make sure the wiring hasn't been butchered.

Occasionally I run into situations where the e-unit coil wire is shorted to the e-unit frame where it comes out from the coil. The insulation has to be worn off at that spot for this to happen.
