Re: Early 70’s coating on Post War Lionel

I learned over this weekend while viewing a Lionel Pre/Post War collection some of the PW had a brown film on the shells. I was told this was some kind of protective coating sold in the early 70’s that did not last long as it turned into a shellac type film. Any suggestions on how or what can clean this coating off without damaging the original paint? This coating was found on several F3 sets still new in the box.

The only coating like that I have seen is cigarette smoke residue on displayed items.
