A group member asked me to look at his early Marx CV from the 1934-36 era. It did not run, and the reverse lever felt loose. This motor was holdover from the Joy Line days.
In the first picture, the first motor is the cadaver and the second motor is the one to be repaired. I have already swapped out the reverse boards, but you can see the missing fiber reversing arm.
The second photo shows a bent motor frame. The motor halves were separated, straightened and reassembled.
The third photo shows the armature on the left. Note there is nothing to keep the armature bearing from spinning. They were a tight fit, but like many, it had loosened with wear and the bearing was loose and spinning in the frame. Just for reference, a later Marx armature is shown on the right. Marx solved the problem by putting in the groove which locked onto a small protrusion in the frame side.
The fourth picture gives you an idea of how loose the bearing was in the motor frame.
The fifth & sixth pictures show where I worked my way around the hole with a sharp center punch. This forces some of the metal inward toward the hole. I went around it hitting each spot lightly, checking the fit, then going around again, checking fit. Using soft hits, I had to go around about 5 times to get a tight fit. Doing each spot the same is critical to keeping the hole centered. With some new brush springs, it is now ready to head home.
