Hello, basic question here. I am trying to get a 1999 MTH TM (#20-800001D) running after it was given to me w/o box or instructions. I put a BCR in it & upon power up (for several minutes) it seems like it's stuck in neutral. So before I wander aimlessly with this engine, can I use the Protosound instructions that came with my late 90's Weaver SD40 to diagnose this MTH Trainmaster ? I think the phrase "all the bells & whistles" emanated from this model, all I get are bells, clanks, whooshes & ca-chunks. My dear brother, who is a conventional-only runner, & who gave me the engine, said it last ran 4 years ago. Thks in advance ! Rich in PA.

Are you sure about the catalog number? Maybe too many zeroes.
Yes, the Weaver and MTH PS1 instructions are the same, at least for what you want to do. Early boards for both products were made by QSI, so the instructions are the same. The clanks and clunks you are getting tell me you are in Reset, not Neutral. Shut the power off, wait 1 minute, then power back on. Do NOT EXCEED 10volts!!! Doing so will put you into reset again. Let the sounds come up, then power down, wait a second or so, then power back up. You should be in forward and see motion. Bless of luck!

Rich. If it is a proto 1 locomotive, power up less than 10 volts and wait. It should start up. Wait until you hear an air release, then you can power down and then power up and the locomotive will move. If you power up more than 10 volts at start up, the locomotive will stay in neutral.
These units can be a little tricky to get going but my experience is if you have a new battery installed and follow the instructions above it should start moving and do other stuff.
Here is the manual and parts diagram for your Locomotive. https://www.mthtrains.com/20-2201-1
Did you get it running?
Thks MD, I'll break out my Z4000 tonight with a voltmeter and get into it. I was just using my old workbench RW transformer and trying to "guess" 10 volts....
Update: (a month later !) finally got back to this engine today and using my Z4000 I got this TM to work perfectly ! It's nicely equipped with illuminated number boards and all the other stuff. After some lubing it seems to run very smooth , at least on the test track. Looking forward to using it.
