Neolube works great. I'm pretty klutzy so if I can do it, anyone can. It's not paint, so if you goof up it's pretty easy to wipe of the excess. I just did the valve gear and smoke box on my Lionel 4-4-2. Took all of about 5 minutes and like I said I'm somewhat of a klutz...

I usually wait about ten minutes and put on a second coat: the first coat has "dried" and that second one darkens it a bit more.  Since neolube conducts electricity so well I really apply it to the rims of the drivers and other wheels where they are shiny - it really makes it look much more realistic.  

 

That smokebox did work out well.
