I'm looking to add engineer and fireman figures to some of my older brass engines that came without them. What's your opinion on the various options out there? I would prefer realistically detailed vs toylike molds. Would prefer pre-painted as I'm not the best figure painter but I would be willing to paint them myself if the model looks good enough.

I prefer the seated MTH figures for steam. These are by far the best figures you will find IMO. Unfortunately MTH is not producing these (the 4 pack) right now that I am aware of. And they are hard to find on eBay. There are also Arttista figures for the engineer and fireman and these should be on eBay. You might check to see what Atlas has as well. I did get some very good quality passenger figures that they sell.
I’ve always liked Arttista. Good variety and nicely painted. MTH ‘s aren’t a bad option if you also need a cab seat to mount them. They look good and offer a few different sets. I picked up a couple at a show from Scenic Express. Can’t remember the line they are sold under. They weren’t bad looking and priced similar to Arttista’s. A lot may come down to how they fit in the cab. I’ve amputated a few toes over the years and had to fabricate seats to place them on.
Go on either Lionel Parts or MTH Parts and search for figures. Either site has an assortment of the figures used in various products, I've picked up a bunch of engineers and fireman there.
Arttista is beautiful stuff. Cost for what you get is spot on. Woodland Scenics would be my next choice. I use both. My preferred is Arttista. Check their website.
I'm with GRJ on this one. The Lionel engineer/fireman figures are very good. Many of them are sitting on a chair as well.
