In November I had to store my trains ahead of a move and just this past week or two I started to move them back to my new place.
I brought them to my new place and let them acclimate to the temperature and so far no problems even from the extreme cold these past weeks. It seems the diecast engines really hold the cold until you unpack them. But all in all no problems.

think about how cold it must get while the trains are on the water or in a cargo hold of an airplane.

If you still worked for Pathmark Cheltenham, you know cementhead would have found room in his overloaded backroom!
Or Bruce would have stored them in the dairy box.
I would think with the modern electronics, should let everything get to room temp.
Automobile electronics work just fine in below zero temps. I'm sure the trains would also.
