In the past I have always had the cruise commander put in. I love the operation. Always nice and smooth.
I have no experience with the DC commander, which doesn't have cruise. My layout is flat. I do know that at the extreme end there is less power than the other areas.
Is DC commander likely to give me a smooth, consistent speed or am I likely to need to get the cruise commander? Please reply only if you have actual experience with the DC commander.

Use the Cruise Commander. I've used a couple of DC Commanders when I was trying to save money, it's like night and day. The small difference in price is not worth saving money on this area of the build. I don't build anything without cruise if I can fit it in.

John, you are the man. I will buy the cruise! I will have a package coming to you in about 2 weeks! I have just been sorting through which ones I want to try working on and the ones I am sure I need you on....that probably just means you'll get a second box later with partially completed installs...but at least I am learning.
Remember, I charge double if you help me install stuff!

John, I don't think anything that I do can be considered helping
I still cannot figure out how to pull the front off of my third rail steamer to change the bulb. I don't want to use too much force and a little bit of paint has come off with the fooling around I have been doing.
Most of the boiler fronts are really just press fit. There are always some oddballs that take a little extra on some brass locomotives.
If I can't figure it out, I take the boiler off and then it usually becomes more obvious.
