I bought all three of em seperately and the Observation was missing it's trucks and some tabs on front of the shell.  They were really grimey-dirty.  I thought I would repaint them as I don't think they cost more that $20 all together, but I decided to see what one roof would look like and then decided to try and clean them up as is.  The wheels polished up really well I think.  They are all original parts and lettering although the "The Lionel Lines" on the observation is all but gone.  I have an early 258 steamer and tender I might just clean up as well to run with these.  I just need to get replacement idler gears and pickup for it.

One question I have is at this point, would these be considered good or very good or lower on the scale?  I always have trouble judging that.

Those look really nice.

Before I ever consider restoring anything, I give the item a thorough cleaning.  Many times after you get all the grime off of a piece and polish it up a bit, it looks pretty good, as does these.

I've been looking for a nice set of the peacock and orange to mate up with a 253 I did cosmetically refurbish a few years ago.  This color combination seems tough to find in really great shape...I think you've done well.

Thanks Guys.  They came out better than I thought they would for sure.  Funny thing is I took all the shiney parts with me on a recent family trip to Disney World.  When the wife drove, I sat in the back with the kids and polished wheels, axles, couplers, you name it.  It worked great, I didn't annoy the wife, and I got some nice shiney parts  I actually polished up enough for two other sets of cars that will get some new paint.  I hope to have those done sometime before next year

I have a set of 610/10/12 cars in the works as well.  These started out as the red body and silver trim/roof version.  They had the same style trucks as these 607/608 cars.  You can probably use this style or the earlier version, but you want to make sure you get trucks without the coupler bar as they would be used on the 1936 on manual box coupler cars.

The top photo are the truck frames from my 610/612 cars and the bottom is to show the earlier version truck on the left and the one on these cars 9middle) and  the later version with a coupler bar on the right.  There are several variations on this theme, but i think finding a set like the left or middle pictures would get you closest to originality.  Your best bet may be to just look on ebay for junk cars, or truck lots.

I bought a restored Lionel 153 at York in 2008, and a year or two later I found a set of 607 & 608 cars that were stripped bare for $15. One coupler on the lead 607 Coach was replaced with a coupler modified to connect with the 153 Electric. I took the cars apart and painted them orange with red window trim. The little 153 pulls these cars very well, so well that I am looking for two more 607 Coaches to repaint.
