I just finished stripping and restoring/painting 5 3656 cattle corrals. I'm in the mist of putting them back together. I would like to replace the fish/paper insulator on the bottom plate of the platform AKA- contact insulator.. SW is out of the repros/nos. Does anyone know of a source for these?

3656-157

If I can;t find them stock. Does anyone know where to acquire fish paper in small quantities that is the right thickness and color. I assume it is the same thickness that was used under the middle rail as insulators.

Fish paper is a heavy, stiff paper infused with oil or tar and used in the electrical industry for insulating transformer windings. The term is old and only understood by technical folks who are at least past their 50's generally.

You could look in an electrical supply store, like Granger, or maybe one of the electronic supply houses, like Mouser or Digikey.

fish paper has generally been replaced by newer, silicone and plastic based materials in the transformer industry and that's why it may be hard to find.

It's possible that a craft store, such as Michaels, would have something usable, but they would not likely understand the term fish paper. As usual with any store, if the clerks do not know the term, they will INSIST that no such thing exists, nor has ever existed, rather than learning something new.

You might also look at some forms of sandpaper for restoring your accessory.

Thanks for the history, RoyBoy .....as I keep saying this forum has the largest number

of individuals who know in depth detail on so many topics.

i had heard of fishpaper but never actually knew how it came about. Now I remember those funny papers wrapped around old transformers.
