Looking at making some background scenery with very little room(retaining walls and steak rock formations). Scenery has got to be where I have the least experience and was looking for advice on working with foam. Type to get, tools, helpful hints, type of paint to use,etc....
Any advice is welcomed, Thanks.

Check out towards the bottom of the first page, I give some photos on how I work with foam. Latex is what you'll want use for paint - it won't melt the foam.

Thanks guys. Any preference on a hot wire knife to cut foam? Is tippi the best? Also, what type, thickness of foam should I get?
I think I am going to start with a brick retaining wall between two level of tracks. Then maybe some rock formations behind the rocks closest to the walls.
I use the Tippi when I need a smooth cut, but for rocks a more jagged look is best. Kitchen steak knives and hack saw blades work fine.

I successfully used a Hot Wire Foam Factory for years. Tried a Tippi and was disappointed by slow cutting. Also used a key hole saw and rasp for fast work.
Just my experience...
I would stick with hot wire if you have a bunch of scenery already in. The small pink particles have a tendency to follow the heisnberg principle and end up every where. If not then Jim's method is fine.If using white beaded foam use a hot wire, its a real mess otherwise.
