Okay...let me phrase this properly. My family is from Montana and I mainly collect what ran in Montana. Thus, over the years I have acquired Northern Pacific, Milwaukee Road, Great Northern, a little Chicago, Burlington & Quincy,  Burlington Northern and Montana Rail Link.

When I went to the Northern Pacific Railroad Historical Association Convention I heard a series of fascinating presentations, panels, and discussions. And there was one thing that did stun me. I never knew that the Northern Pacific and Union Pacific were fierce competitors into Butte, Montana.

So for those of you into the UP I have a couple of questions.

1. What do you know about UP operations in Butte, Montana say, 1920-1970?

2. Can anyone tell me what diesel and steam engines the UP operated into Montana?

I'm going to chew on this as I am a loyal Northern Pacific foamer!  But in the years to come I may have to pick up a couple UP steam, and diesel. I do know about the Butte Special which was hauled by E8's.

Can any of you help?

Let me check my Union Pacific Historical Society magazines, I think they did a big story not too long ago on the UP operations in Butte.

Yep, Summer 2009 issue of THE STREAMLINER. GREAT 17-page article with lots of photos and maps. Send me an address, MU Eagle,  (my email in profile) and I'll put a copy in the mail to you. You too, Killian, if you want one.

Looks like a whole range of locomotives: E's and F's, whole range of steam power including a Challenger 4-6-6-4.
