I caught myself looking at early Diesel engines. Specifically F3, F7, E7, E8, GP7, GP9 in NYC and B&M. Save me from going down this dark road. For a 99% steam layout(one diesel for the son) this could be bad.

Not if you model the late 40's/ 50's, then you can have both.
Go on, you will never look back
On the "MJM" RR I run all the modern stuff along with steam and everything in between. You see we do a lot of steam historic excursion runs.
If your a real Boston & Albany guy you should be looking at early Alco's. Not EMD's. At least the Alco's smoke like a steamer. Hoping that someone makes an HH600 lettered for the B&A. Atlas has done one in HO.
All kidding aside. I have a couple of MTH's New Haven RS-1's. Incredible running and looking engine for the price. Will probably pick up a NYC version. Pretty much run out of steamers to buy for my opperatting scheme. Need some motive power to run a late 40's version of the layout.

Oh the joys of transition era! Nothing wrong with some early diesels running around your layout. It may even keep your steamers in check from giving you issues due to threat of replacement.
I just got one because i love the green BN paint? SD 40 nice engine
No humans were involved.! No sin!
You have not sinned, my son, for thou art with us. Verily, though we walk through the valley of the shadow of steamers we will fear no diesel for thy diesel fuel and colorful liveries sustain us.
I too am guilty of this same sin having given into temptation by pre-ordering my first diesel - the 44 tonner from MTH. I can easily see a set of F3's finding their way to my car at York.
Please pray for me to have the willpower to resist this nefarious temptation.

Step over the line and never look back!
Welcome. Now don't stop short. Always good to show all the eras. Tier 4s too.
No..no..! Pull back from the abyss! Preserve a moment in history, don't try to record it all. For then you will also need the Tom Thumb and other 1830's "beginners" to show the whole spectrum. They write books on "Steam's Finest Hour"...is there a book on "Diesels' Finest Hour"?
Gary, you are a good guy and I think you owe it to yourself to let go and buy what makes you happy.
The sin of First generation diesels can be forgiven, when you confessed and asked for forgiveness, I feared that you had committed a Truly Blasphemous act, and had considered switching to, oh the HORROR of the thought, HO Scale. ( I am ashamedly, a former sinner, of that sin)
If you keep the first generation diesel roster Small, and do not add anything later than a GP/SD 9, you can be forgiven, just get back on the straight and narrow path, and learn from your indiscretions.

Now that you are contemplating sin, the next step is to schedule a black mass!!
reminds me of a story:
sunday school teacher asked her 5th graders what it says in the bible about marriage,
little boy piped up and said, " forgive them father, for they know not what they do".
I sinned long ago, and have been forgiven. But man, those diesels are efficient!
Where is Brother Yojimbo's confessional when we need it?!?!?!?!
