Is there any consensus on the best way to lube engine gears? Put a generous amount (but not too much) in one spot and rotate the gears through several revolutions to work it in on all gears? Or a small dab per tooth as you manually rotate the gears?
Specifically I am talking about the gears in the powered truck of an Alco 2023, but I imagine whichever technique is good for all engines.

Just set a pea sized blob down on top of the worm wheel, and a dab on the worm, be sure to oil the shaft at the bottom of the motor, when you reassemble it, the grease will squish around and coat the gears,.....no need to over think it, ...

I have used both methods you described. If the first time lubing the gears, I use the little on every tooth method. To replenish the gears, I put a little on a few spots.
