The smoke unit generates smoke, but the fan motor does not spin. I pulled it out and attached a 9v battery to the motor...dead. I replaced it with a new Lionel smoke motor. Oh, I checked. It ran like a banshee. Still not spinning. I confirmed it was not running. Turned the volume near off and could not hear the motor spinning. The resistors heat up and produce smoke. I pulled it out, and put a 9v on it and it ran fine. I looked carefully at the wiring and didn't see anything obvious. Oh, I also tried a few feature resets. A feature reset did not solve the problem. A factory reset did not fix it either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Testing the fan without unplugging the 40pin connector may have damaged the board. However a shorted fan motor likely fried the Q209 fan FET on the board.
Oh, I did not test the motor while connected to the board. I removed it completely from the loco, then powered it with a 9v battery.
Seems are destined to have murphy's law working against your electronics...... I still say Ed, too many features packed into these units...... and not enough QUAILITY CONTROL'.... As always'... good luck with this NEW problem..........👺
Thanks, Ted
Jon G, does that mean the entire board needs to be replaced or just the FET? I'm trying to determine whether to take for repair or just write off the fan and live with no smoke. Thanks
A competent ASC should be able to replace the $2 FET. Worth trying instead of buying a $220 board.
George @GGG loves to replace those.

Ted,
Thanks for adding zero value to this thread -- your comments didn't even come close to answering the OP's question.

Well, I guess I should discuss giving him some "love." Thanks for the tip, Gunrunner.
Mike, Ted did wish me luck, then Jon G gave me some advice and then, Gunrunner pointed me to GGG....so, IMHO, Ted helped.
Sent email. I wouldn't say I love this, but I do do them:-) G
Gunrunner, thanks. The board is on its wat to GGG. This was the first time I opened an MTH engine. so simple to remover the shell, and the board....To this neophyte it appeared to be a very clean design.

He certainly did, but with a strong dose of smack included.
All in good fun?
