So I bet my girlfriend (pretty well to do woman) that the Broncos would win. I'd buy her jewelry if they didn't, and she'd buy me a train if they did. I honestly didn't think id win... So after they won she saw me looking at trains- I had a nice Lionel 746 pulled up and she said "that's all you want?" I was pretty surprised, so I started looked at more expensive items- pristine 773s, Lionel standard gauge, postwar boxed sets, etc. Problem is (if you can call it a problem) over the past few years I've accumulated most of my 'dream' trains- got a 1990 repo 700e, Lionel standard gauge Hiawatha, 3rd rail big boy, etc. So what sounds like a dream leaves me looking to buy something I don't necessarily have a burning desire for. I don't want to waste her money but I don't want to miss an opportunity for something great... I know this is a random thread but- thoughts?

We should ALL have this problem!! If you can't decide, send her my way, I have a whole shopping list of trains I desire!!
Go for the latest and greatest, the newly announced Lionel scale AFT- abeit you have to choose the motive power though a sp gs4 or the reading y1. Oh the horror!
Did I mention that she is hot? It's a very odd feeling- I've previously said if I had millions of dollars I could spend it all in 6 hours on trains. I've slowly accumulated most trains I want- and now that I'm faced with a woman who is willing to buy me most any train I want, I'm getting 'stage fright' and can't come up with anything good. It's not that I don't have lists of trains I want, but when faced with the idea of spending thousands on a train, I have problems. Maybe a combination of frugality + having most of what I want and need...
Go with that 746 brother!
If you really like this woman be very cautious. You're walking on nails here so you must be as light as can be.
Pete
I don't know how anyone would be able cope with such a dire crisis as you're facing. Your problem far exceeds anything I have ever faced. Best of luck.
Instead of making a purchase, what about taking her on a romantic train ride? Maybe out to dinner, then the ride back? Might get hugs and kisses too?
I'm still eyeing a nice 746 despite her comments. I own an MTH scale version, but the 746 was a major dream engine of mine.
I also like the idea of a nice train ride- I was trying to take a trip from Jackson to Chicago on an amtrak sleeper- but maybe I should aim big and go for a canadian rockies train ride.
I'm also considering various standard gauge sets (blue comet reproduction), some other postwar classics (773, FM trainmaster)- even eyed the original 700e scale hudson. I've also wanted a y6b engine to add to my roster...
Dilemmas!
Terrible upsetting post to me.
YOU doubted the Broncos would win!!!!!
Shame On You!!!!
Larry
PS Nice girlfriend you have
Lol. I actually WANTED her to win the bet so I could buy her some jewelry that she wanted. I picked the broncos figuring it was a sure thing. Now I'm faced with the dilemma of winning
Honestly, some of you fellows don't make any sense to me.
You have a Hot, wealthy girlfriend and all you can think about is some toy steam locomotive????? I'd make my bet worth more in the relationship department . My goodness what is the new generation thinking about??
On the serious side, I agree with Texas Pete, walk very cautiously. Instead just as LAZ157 suggested, do something romantic and I would suggest you pitch in for expense as well.
I wouldn't take advantage of the situation no matter who won the bet.
If you really want to hold onto her and earn some real bonus points, show her how gracious you can be and buy that little trinket.
Interesting predicament to be in to be sure.
if you can't think of anything for yourself..I've always wanted a 226E......
My oh my.
In fun:
Is anyone else getting the impression this is a young man asking a question and all the answers are coming from a bunch of us old romantic farts.
I've won a few bets with my love of 48 years and you better take advantage of it . She will get a win, you can bet on it. And then you can stand by for paybacks hee hee.
Larry
GO for the combo a Train and a train ride!!!, If not the train pick out a few buildings for your layout
She sounds like a keeper to me, maybe it is time to take the relationship to a higher level? The trains will always be there, but sometimes that special person isn't.
All the best,
Miketg
BTW I am already spoken for (Very Happily) but no one is asking the obvious question
DOES SHE HAVE A SISTER????
Part of my reason in wanting to get something fancy is that when she commented on my 746 engine - she told me that if she had won that I'd be getting her something much more expensive than a 746- I'm pretty sure she would have spared no expense... We have a really good relationship and we aren't afraid to jab each other some.
Hello ACID, just want to know one thing. Does she have a sister.
russ
Probably to young for me but maybe you could have her mother call me.
Sounds like my wife. she would be serious about questioning such a modest request.
An honest person of means would both expect that $**** Bling item and would be as willing to pick up an Aster G scale Big Boy on demo rollers for you.
Price tags do not mean that much for some folks. It's more about the item in view.
I would go for the Aster 1:32 Big Boy plus take her a four day trip to a place of her choosing.

Yes, definitely some over-the-top large scale locomotive! Be vewwy vewwy careful though - sitting on the shelf, it might forever become the focus of discussions on the mental health of train-nuts like us

no doubt that a #1 scale (1:32) Aster live steam locomotive is fun to operate, but for more attention to scale details without the concessions (and expense) needed to produce a workable live steam locomotive, i would put my money in a Koh's model and in fact they are currently taking deposits for a Big Boy (100 total models being made in 5 different configurations) soon to be in production. at $6k they would also be half or less than the price of an Aster Big Boy. the recent run of the Aster UP Challenger (assembled) ran ~$12k.
good luck...gary
Silly man !! No man can win a bet with a woman because in the end you will pay big time !! I go along with the romantic thing and a train ride be the symbolic payment. Be a gentleman-it will pay dividends in the long run !1 Good luck.
Did I mention she likes beer, occasional whiskey, and got me to goto a N.O. Saints game with her? Her sister is taken - and she is pretty much off the market too (sorry fellas- I know what I've got!).
I sort of like the idea of a kohs engine or even an aster. I had briefly thought about a live steam engine but hadn't pursued it much. I might show her the aster engine and see what her reaction would be. But realistically I don't know if could stomach 6-12 k for a train model- no matter how much money she has...
Charlie Row has an electric model for $35??.00 something.
May I suggest a Accucraft gauge 1 live steam Big Boy!
This is just my opinion. Personally, I rain check the win. Buy her something pleasing to the eye, and a nice dinner. Be magnanimous in victory.
Remember, If you don't want to be Ambushed, DON'T walk into one.
Larry Sr,
If Brown, the best wide receiver in the NFL, had not been cheap shotted, to eliminate him from the play offs, the Bronco's would have never made the Super Bowl, and the Steelers would have won their 7th Super Bowl Ring, thumping NC, with Big Ben at the helm! If Pittsburgh's all pro 1000 yrd running back, would not have been injured, prior to the Bronco's/Pittsburgh game, the Steeler Rookie running back, would not have been in the line up, to give Payton a chance at winning his next Super Bowl. Even down 2 of the top players in the NFL, the Steelers came real close to another Super Bowl Ring. The Steelers big loss will be the top tight end in the NFL (Heath Miller), just announced his retirement this week, a man with a lot of brains and a lot of talent, he knew when to get out. We will see if the Steelers front office can bribe him with an incredible Salary, my guess is Miller's beautiful wife, will not want to buy any new O Gauge Trains, he has layed the world at her feet already.
Larry I also took the Bronco to thump NC!
ACID, do you want the ladies heart or an O Gauge Train - your decision.

Dave, your comment sounds iffy.
"Of all the words of mice and men, the greatest are these: 'It might have been.'"
Acid, sounds like a jewelry purchase in immisent
Dave ....buddy I got to agree with RJR.
Dave, your comment sounds iffy.
If poor old Wilson could just get that one pass back, Tom, Brady wouldn't have had a car to give away or another gimme ring
Larry
Get that train Acid
No rewinds, no "what ifs"- final score is what counts and this poor guy is walking in to a trap.
There will be no "jabbing" on this forum!! Lol
Gentlemen,
Not iffy, the illegal hit on Brown was to eliminate Pittsburgh from the play offs in the next game, and it worked. I am glad that the Bronc's won the Super Bowl after eliminating the Steelers however. Gentlemen we collect Super Bowl Rings here in Steeler Country not excuses. Might be a good idea for that man who illegally hurt Mr Brown, not to show up in the Pittsburgh area any time soon. Steeler fans never forget.
I agree about this guy walking into a Trap, however if he wants to be trapped, that is his own choice!
PCRR/Dave
Acid, want even more trains? If so, think marquis cut.
Acid, show some class, the dollar store, has a wind up train, for a buck, at the same time you can get some jewelry there too..lol.. out the door 2 bucks,,,,,that's 1 &1, buck each....
Good for you Acid " Best o' Luck" ;1st comes love than comes marriage then comes baby Acid in the Baby Carriage. Write us back in 10'years tell us how's it going. . Diamonds and quality time together are a girls best friends not 700E's or Vision Line Big Boys.
Pick out the one you really want, and then also surprise her with some jewelry.
Win-Win scenario
How about a train trip? The Strasburg Rail Road begins daily passenger trains on Saturday, March 12. Ride Amtrak to Lancaster and enjoy passenger trains through the Amish countryside. Stay in the Red Caboose Motel at the first grade crossing north of Strasburg. We stayed there during our honeymoon. After that, the cabooses were repainted and renumbered. But the general manager tracked down our caboose. We celebrated our 30th anniversary there.
