Going to have to tear off top level of my layout

Well, I guess if I was looking for excuse to make a smaller version of our esteemed forum member "JoeP's layout"; this might be it.

Everything was fine except for the sporadic operation of my Lionel R30's doors, until on a far curve in the hardest place to access, on the bottom level tunnel, the R30 set stopped and made a buzzing sound which tripped the Z-1000 breaker.

I crawled painfully underneath that section of the layout; after adjusting two support beams out of the way (never a good thing), and looked around with a flashlight.

No derailment, and no visible obstructions.

I did find a very small and wimpy piece of insulation foam between the rails and removed it, then pushed back the train a bit, restarted power, backed out of the tunnel, and then made about 5 loops with no issues.

On the 6th loop, the same thing happened in the same spot.

So....I think I am going to tear off the top of that 1/3 of the layout, and see what the deal is.

This might be a good opportunity to fix what I feel is a poor design, and maybe add some ideas from JoePs layout.

Moreover, it might be a good time to add those O-54 and O-72 curves as well, to accomodate my new Lionel 28072 Hudson

I removed the top level above the troubled section, it is the upper and lower dog bone loop on one corner of the room.

I have some O-72 curves, but they take up so much room, I will have to dismantle an adjacent part of layout.

 

If I do that, I am going to lower that section to make an extension of the lower layout, i.e. maybe staging tracks or a yard.

If I go the yard route I will have the upper level there on a bridge or something, so it is not underground. Or I could make it the lower commuter loop just like the real Grand Central.

If so, then the upper level will no longer have a dog bone loop in that corner like the         lower level, and I will just extend it along the wall with a bridge as a duck under to get into the room which then links into the other side of the layout.

Work...work...work...

 

That leaves 2 sections of existing curves that need to be extended with turnouts so that the larger loop can be outside the current smaller loop, where the other end of the dog bone loop is in the opposite corner of the room.

 

I wonder if that Lionel Hudson 6-28072 is going to have issues with the straight part of the MTH Real Trax turnouts.

 

It also means dismantling an existing yard there on the upper level as well.

Decisions...decisions...
