How many Forum members have ordered this engine? I recognize that the pricing has yet to be announced by Lionel, but some dealers have accepted orders when the catalog showing this engine and matching gold cars was released last year.

I opted for the black version, since I missed that during round 1. I already have a gold Hudson from 2000. One gold-plated locomotive is enough as they're more a novelty item than anything else. So I'm passing on this gold PE Berk.
As we've all realized at various times along the journey in this hobby, NONE of these things are investments. The gold Hudson from 2000 had an MSRP of $1499 as I recall, and dealers can't even sell them for $999 at York today.

Not me. I have no interest in any gold locomotives (Don't like the color of gold personally.) nor do I care for the PE movie items. IMHO, the movie killed the spirit of the old kids book, which book I love. The movie was too much "Look at me, I'm Tom Hanks!" for me to enjoy instead of being about the spirit of childhood Christmas magic like the book was.
David:
I think you represent what a good many will do by ordering the black version.
Since the run is limited to 200, my guess is Lionel will have no problem in selling all of them.
I pre-ordered both back in June. I wanted another black one so that each daughter will have one. I just hope Lionel will change their minds and produce another run of the regular observations instead of just the gold one.
Paul, reminds me of a scene in the ending of the movie, Trading Places, when it came time to decide whether it was cracked crab or lobster. The line is, "why not both".

John, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. And remember it has a train, the gorilla got a nice ride.
