I love this Geep! But it starts short hood forward. Any ideas how to get to start long hood forward? Maybe someone has already done this? I’d like to be more prototypical.

Reverse the polarity on the motor wires......Most railroads ran short end forward !
Most first generation EMD units ran long hood forward , Norfolk and western ran short hood forward and a few others but the majority of GP7 or 9 units were long hood forward. just changing the motor leads will change the direction of travel but not the headlights. they did not turn diesels and if it was by itself you just ran it the way it was.
I looked into exactly this a few months back. It really depends on the road name. Mine, Milwaukee Road, ran short hood forward, but plenty of others ran the other way. You need to check archival photos.
If you need to change it, you might be able to switch some wires. I can't help since I don't have that engine.
Well I got it sorted. Mine is the EMD demo scheme no. 100 just like in the builder’s photo. Lionel did a gorgeous job on the decoration. Looks just like the builders photo. Even has the letter ‘F’ at the front of the long hood, although Lionel chose to ignore this.
I did dig in and made all changes at the motherboard. Swapped red/black for direction, red/blue for headlights, and swapped the coil coupler leads between their respective jacks. Now to search my dry transfers and decals for appropriate letter ‘F’s ! ! !
