Hello All,
I have recently purchased my first starter set and have been pouring over the forum every night for a few weeks now. Reading everything I can, trying to soak up decades of O-gauge info. I would first like to say hello and that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this forum.
The starter set that I purchased is a PRR Keystone Delux GP-38 Freight Set. A hobby shop exclusive. It had been on the shelf for a few years and they had it marked down well. I bought an outer passing loop expansion track and an uncoupling track just to add a little fun for my boy. We will build on it in years to come. I also purchased an old 1033 transformer to run it on AC.
The engine is solid, but when starting out, it makes a good bit of grinding noise. Nothing too terrible, but like an electric drill that is bound up. You have to give it more throttle to get it going. (About +/-25%). Once moving, it's fine. You can still hear the electric motor noise, but it is drowned out from the rail sounds.
After scouring the internet for days, I read that I should apply a bit if grease. I did that and a drop or two of oil to the motor shaft. It seems a little better.
I'm really just wondering if this is normal. I have nothing to compare to. I know it's not a high quality engine, I just want to set my expectations right and know that I'm not damaging it by running it. I also just wanted to say hi to you all. Excited to be here. Thanks for any advice.
Ryan
