I recently went to a train show and purchased some older grey colored track. The fellow I bought it from said it was brand new, and he purchased a box of 100 many years ago. He said that Lionel came out with this track between 1949 and 1953. Said the track needed no cleaning, or polishing to work fine. All the other Lionel track I have ever seen was shinny brite with tin plate, or a few that was stained, but the tops were still shinny. Anyone have any knowledge about this?

As I understand it, during the Korean War period, some track was zinc plated instead of tin plated, thus a duller gray look.

Thanks, Makes sense, I wonder if there are any performance issues?
Tinman,
I have two boxes of the same. On my grandfather's layout, that's all he used on his last additions. It works great other than the appearance.
thanks, great info. I put a bunch of it together and checked continuity and you are right, it checks out great, just looks a little funny. I wonder if it was shiny when new?
Attached is a photo someone asked for. Don't have a lot of these new, but a bunch used, that I did not realize their heritage. Ain't forums great!

It was most likely grey when new, and not shiny. American Flyer has grey track also. That's what came in my 1955 set when I was a kid.
There were other years where AF track was black.
Thanks
Cool.
Believe it or not, some people look for that track to have the correct style for their sets of that period.
(To each their own)
So I understand. I don't have too many pieces, and I did not pay much for it. If anyone who has that style track would like it, let me know. I will take an inventory of them, and dig out what I paid for them, but I think it was around a buck apiece. So if someone wants them, let me know.
