I heard some sneak peak news that the Hallmark 2013 Lionel ornament is going to be a 2037 steam locomotive.

No news on other Hallmark Lionel ornaments yet, but I'm guessing there is going to be a tender for the locomotive and some other piece of rolling stock since they generally have about 3 pieces in the regular ornament line.

I'm not too familiar with post War Lionel equipment other than what I read on the toy train boards, but I don't recall hearing about the 2037. It's generally F3's and GG1's and Hudson's and Berkshire's. Is the 2037 somewhat of a "classic" for post war Lionel locomotives, and of particular interest to toy train fans who collect the Hallmark Lionel ornaments?

The 2037 is a 2-6-4 O27 steamer.  She was a mainstay of many of the postwar train sets.  She was probably the first "big" steam engine most kids had, beyond a 2-4-2 Scout, so there will be sentimental value.  This model also came in several numbers, one of which was 2018. I don't know what variations caused her to get so many different numbers, but a postwar guide might help.

I have a 2037 in a set that was a department store special from 1958.  The tags of the store are not in the box.  My engine is a good runner.

I'm sure I'll end up still buying this one, but I'm starting to think there are still a at least a few (different) classics they have not done yet.

We've certainly seen variants of F3's, FT, large Steamers (J, Chessie, Daylight), etc.

Did we ever see a GP-9 (lots of posible roadnames) or maybe a small diesel switcher (NYC or ATSF)?  Or maybe an FM(Lackawanna, JC, VGN)?

There's probably even room for another modern item (Acela engine, Big Boy (or other articulated), though I'm not sure how well received the Veranda items were when that was done a few years back.

I'm starting to think Hallmark is not trying very hard with this anymore.  (at least not for the standard ornament - the "limited" ones have been relatively good each year, I think)

No, Allan. To the best of my knowlege Hallmark's Lionel repaints have solely been locomotives.
FYI,

Hallmark released locomotives only from 1996 to 1998 and in 1999, they introduced a Lionel Tender. Since 2002 Hallmark has offered three train ornaments each year that complement the annual locomotive ornament.

Hallmark's miniature Lionel ornament series began in 1999 with the Norfolk and Western trio and releases a miniature ornament set annually. New Lionel commemorative ornaments are available at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores beginning in July each year, according to Lionel. Hallmark has been allowed to create these      ornaments through a licensing agreement with Lionel.
