Hi Everyone,

I have spent the last few days searching this site and others for information on materials, structures, etc. for my waterfront. Though I have seen some wonderful scenes I don't remember anyone stating where they got their materials from. That could simply mean they scratch built all of it but again, not always stated. I'm looking for stuff like steel pilings, buildings with piers(kits). I have located some items but was wondering if someone can lead me in the right direction with this.

There is a modeler that does remarkable things in ON30.  I have been following him for several years on his excellent youtube channel.  His layout is unique in that it is an around the walls layout but is sceniced as though it was an island.  You are standing in the water.  Anyhow his name is Troels Kirk, he is not real active recently as his painting is keeping his time all used up.  Here's the link to the videos.  His supplies are simple and he shares all of his secrets.  Enjoy.  Russ

one other source is foscalemodels.com.

doug foscale mostly does unique ho scale kits but he has a few o scale, two of which are harbor structures. he is one of the hobby’s best modelers, his instructions are first rate and his weathering techniques are second to none. hoopers oysters on page 14 is a a beauty which i’ve built. one of the best, most detailed and realistic on my layout. neptune’s on page 12 is another harbor building. haven’t done that one but it looks good. not inexpensive but it imo worth it. definitely worth a look.

Jerrman and George thanks for the info. I knew about Foscale models but I had forgotten they even had  structures in O Scale. That may be because I glanced at the page prior to deciding to make a harbor scene. Jason Jensen is always building one of his HO scale models. I actually have seen Hooper's for sale from Scenery Express.

Jerrman, do you have pics of your finished work and where you have it on your layout?

dave, i know i did the back part of the pier and decking (with basswood stripwood) but can’t recall if the pier on which Hoopers sits had a pier. doug’s description suggests it may but, either way it’s pretty easy with some dowels, stripwood and fine foliage near the bottom to suggest moss/green growth. i also added nail holes/rust where supports are attached to the dowels. doug also sells a skiff which goes well with this structure (the one in my photo is a different one).

Late to the show but here are some of mine.  Almost all have been modified from various manufacturer's kits:

Foscale Hoopers Oysters (kit comes with pier previous poster showed):

I have also built the model tech structures that Peter built (Smith Bro’s. And Weatherbys) including a number of others. I think they make some very unique structures but, unlike FosLimited and BarMills, their instructions leave something to be desired, IMO. Rather than relying on step by step detailed sequential instructions, model tech tends to use a lot of diagrams. One thing to watch for is that you really have to look ahead with the pictures so that you don’t assemble one section before you’re supposed to do another. If you’re good with all that, their finished product can be very good.
