As many here on the forum know, I model the Penn Central railroad.  Penn Central is not one of the big names in model railroading.  Manufacturers do not offer a lot of product in this paint scheme because of the limited following.  The green cars probably sell better than the black locomotives just because they look somewhat attractive.  Atlas O has probably been the most prolific in their offerings.  MTH, Lionel and WBB have had limited offerings.

There are several locomotives that I have been waiting for the manufacturers to produce in Penn Central paint.  The first one was the GP9.  I got tired of waiting and purchased an undecorated Atlas O unit.  This was my first attempt at painting a locomotive.  Thank goodness the color scheme is pretty simple, Shoot it black and apply decals.

The next unit on my list was the K-Line GP38.  This unit was cataloged but never produced due to the demise of the company.  I decided to find a used K-Line unit and repaint it into PC colors.  I recently found one with TMCC and Railsounds.  It was a non-dynamic brake equipped unit.  I found that Lionel used the K-Line tooling on their TMCC GP38s.  I was able to purchase a dynamic brake blister from Lionel.  I changed the lights to LEDs and am preparing to upgrade the controls with an ERR Cruise Commander M.  After painting the loco and applying some light weathering, I can finally say "I got my K-Line Penn Central GP38."

Now, if I can just get the manufacturers to paint a GP35, a SD45 and a SD40 in PC I'll be a happy camper.

This is the K-Line GP38 I just finished

Atlas O GP9 I did a few years ago.  I scratch built the transfer caboose it is pulling.

Yes, indeed! Model railroaders are an ingenious bunch. They have come up with all sorts of ways of filling gaps in their rosters. I have three.

This is a Lionel 2056 rescued from a parts box beneath a vendor's table that was custom painted and detailed as Reading T-1 2124. Two 1666T tenders were spliced to represent a long, elegant T-1 tender. Painting and detailing are "basic" ways of filling a vacancy.

in the 1970's and 1980's, Robert ("Bob") Gale of Horsham, PA, sliced, diced and "kitbashed" common Lionel locomotives to make everything from switchers to "scale" GG-1's, Big Boys, and 4-12-2's with dual motors. Around 1981, the TCA Quarterly featured his "Super Classic" models on the cover and published an article about them. It would take nearly 10 years for Lionel and MTH to mass-produce new "O" Gauge 3-Rail "scale" models.

This is a K-Line caboose modified as a Reading caboose by George Ether, a retired Reading Company conductor. He wore his conductor's uniform when he came to the York Meet. I purchased this caboose from him there.

I'm eager to see other replies.

Atlas O has made the IC PS 40' Hy-cube box cars.

MTH has made the IC 4-bay, open-top hoppers and IC Trailers on Flat Cars.

MTH can still come out with an IC GP40 and PS-1 50' Box Cars in the 1967 scheme.

Weaver Models is running new road numbers of the Illinois Central PS-2-CD 4740 cu. ft. 3-bay covered hoppers and four-bay, open-top hoppers, sometime soon.

It was only a period of 5 to 6 years before they became Illinois Central Gulf.

I was wishing Lionel would come out with a pre 1967 IC SD70, SD40, GP38, 11, or some such ugly black diesel. I was pleased to get the Berkshire they did for steam. How about a Mountain, Mikado, or Pacific again?
