Over the past week I dismantled my old layout and have put up the new benchwork for a new layout.  I covered the entire layout surface with homosote and need to construct a small hatch in one area so that I can access unreachable parts of the layout.  Need some ideas on the best way to do this.  Should I use hinges, lift up hatch with no hinges etc. ???

Regards,

Paul

I've always prefered the drop-down. If you go up with it, what do you do with it then?

If it's hinged you have to worry about whatever's on the "hatch" clearing whatever's beside the opening and you still don't have 360 degree access to the layout because the hatch is still in the way.

If you just drop it down and set it out of the way you have complete access. Unencumbered.

Good information.Sometimes we overlook what is practical.Originally Posted by Vulcan:

I have an area where I need access to the end of my car yard and the mainline incase of problems. I plan on having a two sided building just block the view of the hole. Nothing to move or get broken. The building may have a hinged roof if it doesn't do it's job of hiding the hole. I have not built it yet to show pictures of. I have temporarily set up fake cardboard walls and the idea looks like it will do the job. Not as nice as some of the work shown here.
